Douglas Middle School is very proud to be a member of the NAASP National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Students are selected during their 7th grade school year for participation during their 8th grade school year. Selection is based on three strict criteria.
1. Students must maintain an average of 90 or better in ALL academic subjects.
2. Students must not have ANY school discipline write ups.
3. Students must be approved by a faculty selection committee.
The NJHS works very closely with the Douglas Pre-K each school year. Our relationship with these students is one that is greatly treasured. We begin the year with a visit to the pumpkin patch where all students are taken for a day of fun and exploring on a pumpkin farm. Students can ride on a hay ride, choose their own pumpkin from the patch, play games, find their way through a corn maze, and even attend a petting zoo. Next, the NJHS treats our pre-K to a October Fall Festival complete with face painting, pumpkin decorating, and "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown". NJHS also treats these students with goodies and special surprizes at Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Easter. We celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday with an annual visit to Sloman Primary School. NJHS hosts an Easter Egg Hunt for the pre-school complete with our own Easter Bunny and we also celebrate "The Week of the Young Child" in April. Our year with the pre-school would not be complete without a trip to the Birmingham Zoo where we practice zoo-phonics with our little ones.
